Henry Giroux

AKA: Giroux · Henry A. Giroux

majorPerson

The Record

Henry Giroux is how Freire's argument reached American classrooms. He did it with books that schools of education still assign, and he brought the Frankfurt School into the same argument.

Theory and Resistance in Education came out in 1983 with a foreword by Freire. It works through the hidden curriculum, ideology and schooling. It asks whether schools reproduce the existing order or can be sites of resistance; Giroux answers that they can. The book is where the phrase critical pedagogy becomes the name of a field.

Education Under Siege followed in 1985, written with Stanley Aronowitz. It called for schools to become sites for the training of organic intellectuals. The term is Gramsci’s, and they chose it on purpose. Teachers as Intellectuals in 1988 completed the move. The teacher is a political actor rather than a technician delivering a curriculum, and the classroom is the position he holds.
