They wrote it down.

Programmes, charters, annual reports, minutes, and letters to funders: the people who set out to change American institutions described what they were doing, in print, at the time, and often in the institutions' own publications. This archive collects those statements in the documents where they were made, and holds each one to exactly what it establishes and no further. A record of what somebody said about themselves is filed as evidence that they said it, never as evidence that it was true.
