Recruitment and teaching

Löwenthal's 1964 recommendation was sent to philosophy chair Richard Popkin. It praised Marcuse 's scholarship and described classes Löwenthal had attended at Brandeis. The letter records a specific professional contact in the hiring process. (pp.210–211) [1]

Leiss's notes document the 1966–67 Hegel seminar. Davis then resumed study with Marcuse in 1967. In July 1968, the philosophy department publicly praised his work and defended the exchange of unpopular ideas against threats and attacks. It also announced an annual Herbert Marcuse prize in philosophy. (pp.1–2) [2] (p.xi) [3] (pp.119–120) [3]
