Adorno and Max Horkheimer argued that large entertainment businesses produced similar goods for mass audiences. They called this system the culture industry. Their concern was how business power shaped thought and free time. [3], pp. 94–97
Their Dialectic of Enlightenment also asked how efforts to use reason and control nature could serve oppression. They still viewed reason as necessary for freedom. [3], pp. xiv–xvi
