Abolition as a social program
The group's brochure distinguishes abolition from repairing the existing prison system. It takes its name from the movement against slavery, which sought to end that institution rather than improve it. (file p.2, “our vision”) [3]
Its proposed strategy has several parts: stop prison expansion, reduce reliance on policing, create alternatives and change public opinion and policy. People directly affected by imprisonment should help lead that work. (file p.2, “what we do” and “who we are”) [3]
