The purpose of this chapter—which is in clear violation of the California Education Code, Section 51530—is to discuss teacher education reform in the United States from the context of critical pedagogy in general and a theory of imperialism and class struggle that is indebted to the Marxist–Leninist tradition.

The book sets the chapter's first words in small capitals, rendered here in ordinary case. The chapter opens by quoting California Education Code section 51530, which forbids advocating communism in a public school, and the sentence quoted here says the chapter violates it. Chapter 6 is a revised version of an essay first published in the Journal of Teacher Education 52, no. 2 (2001).
