The Combahee River Collective Statement

Read in the copy on the shelf, the Kitchen Table first edition first printing, whose copyright page reads 'Copyright (c) 1986 by Kitchen Table: Women of Color Press' and 'Foreword, copyright (c) 1986 by Barbara Smith'. The foreword opens on printed page 3 and is signed 'Barbara Smith / April, 1986' on printed page 7; the statement itself begins on printed page 9. The page image was read directly to settle the typography: the printed line is 'there were three women-Demita Frazier, Beverly Smith, and I-who were active', set with em dashes tight to the words, and the scan's text layer inserts a space around the second dash because it falls at a line end. The same text is in the corpus at work:w3cc597daa23abc41, whose corpus record names this same PDF. The scan reads 'Comhahee' for 'Combahee' in the foreword's first line, which the page image shows plainly as 'Combahee'; that misread is set right and falls outside the quoted span. Smith names all three women and then describes the method, which is why the claim says 'wrote' rather than 'co-authored'.
