Cammett-Genovese reception role

Eugene D. Genovese (1930-2012) was a Marxist historian at Rutgers University in 1963-1967 and a contributor to Studies on the Left. His March-April 1967 review essay used Cammett's book to develop an argument about culture, agency, hegemony, socialist theory, political education, and the absence of an effective American socialist party.

Interpretation and limit

The essay criticized economic mechanism and determinism while retaining material interests and political organization. It evidences Genovese's interpretation and attempted application, not adoption by SDS or the New Left as a whole.
