Teaching and students

Ideas encountered through teaching

Marcuse’s American academic career included teaching at Brandeis University and the University of California, San Diego .[3][4] This section follows the people and institutions connected to that work.

Angela Davis recalled studying with him. The archive records a tutorial relationship and connects her account to an interview given in 2019. The interview date identifies the later testimony, rather than the time of the teaching itself.[5]

Andrew Feenberg and George Katsiaficas also appear in the archive as students of Marcuse.[4][13] These connections give the dossier several paths through people.

Follow what a student carried forward

A teaching relationship establishes contact and study. Understanding what a student subsequently took from Marcuse requires that person’s account and their later work. Those can deepen each relationship into a historical pathway as the evidence is assembled.
