Predecessor note

First attested in the Official Register of the United States 1951 (as of May 1, 1951, printed p. 33), earlier than the 1956 volume currently cited. One of two successors to the Division of Research for Europe: it continued that division's chief, Richard M. Scammon, and its British Commonwealth, Central European, and Western European branches, while the Eastern European portfolio went to the separate Division of Research for U.S.S.R. and Eastern Europe. Not the same unit under a rename; its scope excludes the Soviet and Eastern European research the predecessor held.
