Marcuse and Buhle: why culture mattered ↗
Culture becomes a political question
Marcuse described culture as promising fulfillment within a person’s inner life. That promise could help sustain a world that denied fulfillment in daily life. He also described art as keeping desires alive that this world could not satisfy.
In 1968, Paul Buhle cited this essay while rethinking the history of American radicalism. His use carries us from Marcuse’s argument to a named reader and a specific article.
