Dated role and investigative relevance

1952-1979 American academic and movement-facing phase. After government service he held Soviet-studies research affiliations and university appointments, taught identifiable students, corresponded with SDS and REP figures, and intervened publicly in New Left debates. These are separate relations, not one chain of command.

Official university histories establish his teaching chronology. Davis supplies direct testimony about his teaching and recommendation. Na 3, 875 inventories correspondence and movement documents. Marcuse's own interview rejects the press-made role of movement spokesman and says his participation was through words and ideas.

Resistance and theory-to-action bridge

Marcuse justified a conditional right of extralegal resistance against an entrenched hierarchy. He also opposed tactics he judged isolated, premature, terroristic, or strategically ineffective. The first claim concerns political legitimacy; the second concerns strategy under particular conditions.

His New Left bridge is documented through texts, teaching, correspondence, public intervention, and named activist reception. It does not depend on a command role.
