Self-description evidence, 1934/35 and 1944

The two Institute-issued reports describe organizational continuity from Frankfurt through exile and New York, Columbia housing and auspices, Extension teaching, a separate research program, and wartime staff dispersal.

The Institute was the research organization, not the Society itself and not an ordinary university department. It combined private Society sponsorship with Frankfurt University affiliation and a state-appointed director.

Hermann Weil funded operations and the connected professorship; Felix Weil funded the building and library. The original endowment instrument and accounts remain pending.

Frankfurt founding-circle dossier

Privately financed autonomous research institute affiliated with Frankfurt University. Founded legally in 1923, opened in 1924, and governed through the Society and director structure. Its program changed between Grünberg and Horkheimer.
